Embroidery 101

What is Embroidery?

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric by stitching a design onto it with needle and thread.

It began as a hand craft, and it is now done by computerized machines that follow a digital design and place thousands of stitches every minute, with the same accuracy on every piece. An industrial embroidery machine carries several needle heads side by side, so one operator can stitch the same design on many pieces at the same time. That is why factories use it for uniforms, caps, fashion wear, lace and home textiles.

Types of stitching

The stitches a machine can make

Flat stitch

The everyday stitch. Threads are laid in fills and outlines for logos, text and motifs on garments and uniforms.

How it works

From artwork to finished piece

  1. STEP 1

    Digitize the design

Artwork is converted into a stitch file that tells the machine the stitch type, direction and density.

  2. STEP 2

    Hoop the fabric

The fabric is stretched flat in a hoop (frame) so the stitches stay tight and the design stays accurate.

  3. STEP 3

    Stitch automatically

Needles loaded with different thread colours move over the fabric and stitch the design at high speed.

  4. STEP 4

    Trim and finish

Threads are trimmed automatically between colours, so the finished piece comes off clean and ready.
